A suspected Palestinian burglar who broke through a barrier of an Israel Police checkpoint on Route 90 in the Jordan Valley on Sunday morning was shot and killed, police reported.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred at about 1 a.m.

The alleged burglar had been behind another vehicle which was undergoing an inspection when he pulled out of the lane and rushed through the checkpoint in an apparent attempt to escape inspection. The driver was wearing a face mask, police said.

A police officer who was posted at the makeshift checkpoint signaled to the driver to stop the vehicle, but the Palestinian continued to charge at the security forces, prompting them to fire at him.

One of the officers was in the path of the accelerating vehicle and feared that he would be hit by the car, said the statement.

Police said that they had received a report of a suspicious vehicle on the road. They added that upon inspecting the dead Palestinian’s vehicle, they found tools commonly used for burglaries, as well as items that are believed to have been stolen.
