American Jews are increasingly critical of Israel’s ongoing war against the Hamas terror organization in the Gaza Strip, a new poll shows, with a majority saying they believe Israel is committing war crimes in the coastal enclave.

On Sunday, The Washington Post published the results of a poll conducted by the SSRS polling firm from September 2nd through the 9th, surveying 815 American Jews on their views regarding their Jewishness, Israel, and the war in Gaza.

The poll found no significant change in the level of identification among American Jews with Israel, with 58% saying they have much in common with Israeli Jews, compared to 60% who responded that way five years ago.

Similarly, 56% said they are very or somewhat emotionally attached to Israel, compared to 58% in 2020.

There was, however, a significant drop in support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since 2020.

Five years ago, 40% of respondents said they rated his premiership positively, compared to just 32% in 2025. The percentage who said his leadership was “poor” surged from 28% to 48%.

The percentage who said the US is too supportive of Israel nearly tripled since 2013, from 11% to 22% in 2020 to 32% in 2025.

American Jews are increasingly pessimistic regarding the viability of the two state solution, with 59% saying they believe a Palestinian state could potentially coexist peacefully with Israel – down from 63% in 2020, while 41% say it could not, up from 34%.

While the overwhelming majority of US Jews (91%) said Hamas is to blame for the continuation of the war in Gaza, nearly as many (86%) also said Netanyahu is to blame, with 80% blaming Israel generally.

The poll found that American Jews are more likely than Americans in general to support sending additional military aid to Israel in its war against Hamas, with 59% of Jews supporting more aid, compared to 32% of the general population.

Most American Jews (57%) oppose Israel governing the Gaza Strip after the war, compared to 35% who support it. The same number back Palestinian Authority control over the Gaza Strip.

The most popular option among US Jews for post-war administration of Gaza is local Palestinian control via elected officials in Gaza, followed by a pan-Arab governing body.

Nearly two-thirds (61%) of US Jews believe Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza, and 39% believe Israel has committed genocide.
