‘No ceasefire’ – Iran warns war with Israel could resume suddenly

Iran’s foreign minister says there is no long-term truce in place with Israel, while Jerusalem think tank warns Tehran may attack if the U.S. appears distracted.

Tensions between Israel and Iran remain dangerously high, with a fragile calm that could collapse at any moment and reignite a broader regional conflict, according to both Iranian officials and Israeli analysts.

“There is no ceasefire agreement; there is nothing else,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Financial Times in a recent interview.

Israel “stopped the aggression without any conditions, and we stopped the defense. When there is no aggression, naturally, there is no reason to defend ourselves,” he added.

He warned that the situation could quickly deteriorate. “The fighting can resume. They can resume, we can resume… everything is possible, and it is not just Iran that should be worried and concerned.”

A recent report by the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs warned that Israel is preparing for a potential surprise attack by Iran.

Such an attack, the report suggests, could be motivated by Iran’s desire for revenge following Israel’s devastating surprise opening salvo on Iranian targets in June’s Operation Rising Lion.

According to the report, a surprise Iranian attack on Israel could be triggered under several conditions.

Tehran may act if it believes it can secure a swift and decisive military victory that would reestablish its deterrence. Another possible catalyst would be visible internal instability within Israel, such as political turmoil or a major security crisis.

Additionally, Iran might be emboldened to strike if the United States appears diplomatically paralyzed or disengaged — for instance, during an election season or due to broader foreign policy uncertainty.

Both Israeli and Iranian officials have described the confrontation as entering a “new phase.”

Israel has accelerated production of its Arrow missile defense systems and bolstered its broader defense infrastructure. At the same time, Iran is rebuilding its military capabilities and maintaining a defiant posture on its nuclear ambitions.

The Islamic Republic has doubled down on its commitment to rebuilding and continuing its nuclear development.

“Iran will not retreat from its nuclear program,” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in July.

“Any Israeli attack will be met with painful retaliation targeting central Israel.”
