A senior Hezbollah official has threatened retaliatory action by Iran against Israel in response to an attack attributed to Israel in Syria in which several Iranian soldiers were killed.
Sheikh Naim Qassem, deputy leader of the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror organization, warned Monday that Iran would respond to last week’s airstrike on the Tiyas Military Airbase which was struck by several missiles on Monday, leaving at least seven Iranian soldiers dead.
“The elimination of the Iranians by Israel at the airbase will be met with a response,” Qassem, told the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen TV.
“By bombing the T-4 airport, Israel wanted to create an equation that shows that it controls the rules of the conflict, but we do not accept this. We expect an Iranian response against Israel, but we do not know its nature or details,” he said.
“Israel is not ready for an all-out war, and therefore it is waging a campaign between the wars. The axis of resistance will not permit for its movement in Syria to be restricted,” he added.
The Russian Defense Ministry blamed Israel for the attack, saying that two Israel Air Force (IAF) F-15 jets fired the missile at the Syrian airbase from Lebanese airspace.
The T4 Air Airbase is home to Iranian forces, the Lebanese Hezbollah terror organization and Syrian regime forces.
An anonymous Israeli army source was quoted in the New York Times Monday as stating that Israel did indeed attack a Syrian air base a week ago, but an official IDF spokesperson shortly thereafter walked back the claim.
The Islamic Republic itself has threatened to respond to the alleged Israeli strike, saying it would come “at the right time” and that Israel would “regret” the attack.
“The Zionist entity will sooner or later receive the necessary response and will regret its misdeeds,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi told reporters on Monday.
On Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned Israel that its air strike in Syria has put it in direct confrontation with Iran.
“The Israelis committed a historic mistake… and put themselves in direct combat with Iran,” Nasrallah warned in a televised address.
Israel’s security forces are on high alert in anticipation of a possible revenge attack by Iran.
