Trump signals Iran talks could continue beyond deadline

President Donald Trump is reportedly open to extending nuclear negotiations with Iran beyond the August 18 deadline, signaling he is still betting on diplomacy despite repeated Iranian violations and growing skepticism over the interim deal.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump has weighed options ranging from renewed large-scale military action to limited retaliatory strikes, but currently favors targeted attacks while allowing negotiations to continue. Behind the scenes, technical talks in Doha are focused on Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, the Strait of Hormuz, and broader regional security.

Tehran, however, is striking a far tougher tone. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, declared the Islamic Republic is “ready for war” if necessary, arguing that “only someone who is prepared for war can negotiate well.” He also warned that free passage through the Strait of Hormuz would only remain in place during the 60-day interim agreement, underscoring the fragile nature of the negotiations.
