Russia condemns US strikes, warns other nations may supply Iran with nukes

Moscow blasts American airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling them illegal under international law and claiming Iran could now be armed with nuclear bombs provided by other countries.

Russia on Sunday condemned American airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the attacks “irresponsible” and a “gross violation of international law,” while Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to meet with Iran’s top diplomat.

On Sunday morning, hours after seven American B-2 Spirit stealth bombers struck three Iranian nuclear facilities overnight, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement in which it “strongly condemned” the attacks, which the U.S. dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer.

“It is already clear that a dangerous escalation has begun, fraught with further undermining of regional and global security,” Moscow said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to travel to Moscow to meet with Putin following the attacks, after he appeared to rule out further negotiations with the U.S. or Europe on Iran’s nuclear program.

“Last week, we were in negotiations with the US when Israel decided to blow up that diplomacy,” Araghchi tweeted Sunday.

“This week, we held talks with the E3/EU when the US decided to blow up that diplomacy. What conclusion would you draw? To Britain and the EU High Rep, it is Iran which must ‘return’ to the table. But how can Iran return to something it never left, let alone blew up?”

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council who served as president of Russia from 2008 to 2012, said that the U.S. airstrikes would not prevent Iran from pursuing uranium enrichment and could, in fact, lead other countries to supply Tehran with nuclear warheads.

“What have the Americans accomplished with their nighttime strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran?” Medvedev tweeted.

“A number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads.”

Medvedev did not elaborate on the source of this information or on which countries allegedly offered to supply Iran with nuclear weapons.
