Muslim in France stabs woman and girls for immodest dress

The mayor of the French town where a Muslim man attacked a woman and her young daughters prefers “not to speculate about the motive of the attack,” while a local prosecutor denies reports that the assailant had shouted that the girls were immodestly dressed.

A Moroccan-born Muslim man was arrested after stabbing and severely injuring a Frenchwoman and her three young daughters on Tuesday at the VVF Alpine resort of Garde-Colombe in southern France. He shouted that they were immodestly dressed, according to initial reports, which were later denied by a local prosecutor, the UK Telegraph reported.

“I wanted to quash the rumor currently doing the rounds because on no account did this man make such comments about the fact that the attack may have been motivated by the victims’ dress code,” Raphael Balland, prosecutor of Gap – a city close to the resort – stated.

However, the 37-year-old assailant, referred to as Mohamed B, “may have acted out of religious motives,” according to French television channel TF1, which reported that he was furious about the girls wearing shorts.

The TV newscaster said that the mother had helped Mohamed when he was ill the previous day. He attacked the girls while they were eating breakfast on the terrace before entering the hotel room to stab the mother in the chest.

The youngest victim, 8, was rushed to a hospital in Grenoble with a punctured lung. Her mother, 46, and sisters, 12 and 14, are being treated at another hospital closer to the resort with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the Telegraph said, citing initial reports.

Garda-Colombe Mayor Edmond Francou said he preferred “not to speculate about the motive of the attack” in the wake of the massacre in Nice last week.

A resident of the Paris area with a record for petty crimes, the assailant was on vacation at the same resort with his pregnant wife and two children.
