IDF attacks Syrian target in response to mortar fire

Israel is constantly on alert on its border with Syria as rebel forces fight the Syrian Army. The IDF continues to act on its promise to respond to any and all fire that threatens its citizens.

The IDF attacked a Syrian military position in the Golan Heights on Wednesday in response to a mortar round fired from Syria into Israel earlier in the day.

The mortar round exploded in an open space, causing no injuries or damage.

The IDF said the target it attacked was a Syrian army artillery battery.

“The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israel’s sovereignty and the safety of its citizens. The IDF views the Syrian regime as responsible for activities in its territory,” the IDF stated.

The incident appears to be an incident of fire spilling over from the Syrian civil war into Israeli territory, after a few months of quiet on the border.

There were several such incidents in the summer.

Opposing factions in Syria’s civil war have been battling in the Kuneitra area adjacent to Israel’s northern border.

While Israel has refrained from intervening in the Syrian conflict, the IDF has responded to stray fire from Syria with artillery shelling or an air strike against Syrian army or rebel positions, in most cases targeting the source of fire.
