Netanyahu wants Trump to remove US from UN Human Rights Council

Netanyahu said in a Likud faction meeting earlier this week that it is strategically beneficial for the US to leave the UN Human Rights Council, after disclosing he raised the issue with President Trump.

Leaked recordings from a Likud faction meeting on Monday reportedly revealed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised the possibility of the United States withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), during his meeting with President Donald Trump two weeks ago in Washington.

“During the visit I raised the question of whether the US should remain in the Human Rights Council,” Netanyahu was quoted as saying, according to Israel Army Radio.

MK Anat Berko asked Netanyahu if it would be preferable for the US to keep its voting rights and influence by remaining in the UNHRC.

“No, it’s better to leave,” Netanyahu responded. “These types of organizations must be delegitimized.”

The Politico reported last weekend that the Trump administration was weighing abandoning the UNHRC in light of its endless, disproportionate criticism of Israel, as well as its questionable effectiveness and credibility.
