Desecrated US flag with anti-Semitic messages found near Florida synagogue

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

A desecrated US flag covered in anti-Semitic messages was found in front of a synagogue in Tampa, Florida.

The messages reportedly blamed the Jews for media bias and immigration policies.

The local WTSP reported on Tuesday that police have launched an investigation into the incident. “We are looking to see if there’s any video; we would like to see who placed the flag there,” stated Tampa police spokesman Steve Hegarty.

WTSP reported that the police have a photo of the flag, but are not releasing the photo or the exact words written on it to help the investigation.

The synagogue that was targeted is in South Tampa. The congregation, Schaarai Zedek, has existed for more than a hundred years, and 1,100 families worship there.

“There’s a lot going on in the world and a lot of different opinions and people become frustrated and I think this was a voice of frustration,” Rabbi Richard Birnholz responded to the incident.

He added that “we are living in strange times for sure,” but he urged his community to “be vigilant, love your neighbor, take care of one another and have a big enough heart and a big enough mind to include all people and do what’s best for the world as a whole.”
